Queenstown sells fear with a view. The view does not require the fear. Wakatipu on a still morning, the road to Glenorchy, and Milford in the rain are the things that stay after the GoPro clip.

Pick one expensive adrenaline booking if you want it. Spend the rest on geography.

Where to spend your money

Book: Milford or a serious hike, one of jet / bungy / skydive, gondola or Ben Lomond.

Skip: stacking every franchise on the main street, LOTR tours that are shopping, and same-day bungy plus wine plus Milford.

The part nobody tells you

Foehn wind and lake forecast will cancel the scenic flight you wanted more than the bungy. Build slack. The town is small enough to rebook. The coach to Milford is not.

A 12-plus hour day. The sound is the real cathedral of the region. Fly-cruise-fly if you can spend it; coach-cruise-coach is how most people do it and it is still worth it. Not a "maybe" if the weather is merely grey — Milford is often rain.

The Dart River and Glenorchy road is the scenery people think is everywhere. A half day here beats a second bungy. LOTR tours vary from landscape to prop-talk — pick landscape.

The gondola is the easy overlook. Luge is fun and not a thrill-sport. Hiking Ben Lomond is the free version with more sweat. Do not stack gondola, bungy and jet boat in one afternoon unless you like queues.

Historic Kawarau is the original commercial bungy. Nevis is higher and a bigger day. Pick one. A tandem is not cheaper per person in any way that matters.

Do I need to bungy?

Milford from Queenstown vs Te Anau?

Staying in Te Anau shortens the morning. Queenstown is the hub with the flights and the bars. If Milford is the priority, sleep closer.

Budget?

High. Activities are priced as once-in-a-trip. Food in town is restaurant-priced. Cook breakfast.

Driving?

Left side, one-lane bridges, winter ice. Fine if you are used to it. Tours for Milford if you are not.
