Mexico City is not a prelude to a beach. It is the trip. The grid of neighbourhoods, the museums, the markets and the pyramids an hour away are a capital on the scale of Paris or Tokyo, with better tacos.

Teotihuacan in the morning sun is the day you will remember if you do not waste it in traffic at 11am. Casa Azul is a small house with a large queue. The Anthropology Museum is the one you should have budgeted two hours more for.

Where to spend your money

Book: Teotihuacan early, Casa Azul official tickets, a taco tour, Anthropology.

Skip: balloon-plus-everything packages, Xochimilco if you are a tired solo traveller, and "photo tours" of colourful buildings you can walk in Roma for free.

The part nobody tells you

Sunday the centro fills with families and the palace often opens for the huge flag ceremony energy. It is crowded and actually local. Monday many museums close. Plan the pyramid for a weekday.

Mexico City activities: common questions

How many days in Mexico City?

Five is comfortable. Three is Centro, one museum, Teotihuacan, food. A week if you add Puebla or a slow Roma stay.

Altitude?

2,240 metres. Day one is not for mezcal flights and pyramid sprints. Water, lighter meals, slower walks.

Safety?

Normal big-city awareness. Use authorised taxis or Uber/Didi, especially at night. The metro is fine in the day with zippers watched. Stay out of obviously empty industrial areas. This is not a no-go city.

Polanco vs Roma vs Centro?

Polanco is polished and expensive. Roma/Condesa are walkable and where many visitors are happiest. Centro is monumental and noisier — great to visit, mixed to sleep.

Cash?

Cards widely, small taquerias cash. ATMs inside banks. Avoid street money changers.
