Edinburgh is vertical. You will underestimate distances that look short on a map because they include a crag. Plan one hill thing per day: castle or Arthur's Seat, not both before lunch.
The Royal Mile exists to move people between the castle and the parliament and to sell them wool. Your trip gets better the moment you treat it as a corridor. Leith, the New Town terraces, and a proper tasting room are the city.

Three. Castle, underground, Britannia or Arthur's Seat, and a neighbourhood that is not the Mile (Stockbridge, Leith, Marchmont). Four if Stirling or the coast.
Avoid it if you want a quiet historic city. Come if you want the Fringe. There is no mixed version. Prices and crowds are extreme.
Walk it once from the castle down to Holyrood, then stay off it for food. The Mile is a retail chute. Grassmarket and Cockburn Street are not automatically better, but nearby residential streets are.
Loch Ness and back. You will see a loch from a car park after five hours on a bus. Go to Stirling, the Trossachs with an overnight, or fly to Inverness separately.
