Things to Do in Cusco Besides Treating It as a Machu Picchu Waiting Room

Cusco is a high-altitude city with Inca walls in the streets. Spend two nights before the citadel, book Machu Picchu with the current ticket rules, and do not hike the Inca Trail without a permit.

Cusco is 3,400 metres. Machu Picchu is lower. That is why the city is not a same-day airport-to-ruins product unless you enjoy headaches.

The Inca stonework in the streets is not a teaser. Sacsayhuaman and Qorikancha would be headline sites in any country that did not also have Machu Picchu.

The part nobody tells you

Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo) is a functional town of hotels and pizza. It is not charming. It is the correct place to sleep. Pay for the bus up, start in the earliest slot you can function in, and do not expect solitude on the main terraces in July.

The Dominican convent on Inca foundations is the city in one site. The cathedral on the plaza is a separate ticket. Together they are a morning if you are still moving slowly in the altitude.

Cusco activities: common questions

How many days in Cusco?

Two nights before Machu Picchu to acclimatise, plus the citadel overnight or long day, plus a Sacred Valley day. Four to five nights in the region is the minimum that does not feel cruel.

Altitude sickness?

Common. Walk slowly, skip alcohol on night one, consider a doctor-approved medication if you have had issues before. Rainbow Mountain the day after you land is how people get ill.

Tickets?

Machu Picchu circuits and time slots sell out in high season. Buy from official channels or a trusted operator. Huayna Picchu is a separate limited ticket.

ATMs and cards?

Cards in hotels, cash for small things and some ruins. Tell your bank. USD sometimes accepted at a bad rate.

Coca?

Tea is widely offered. It is not a miracle, and chewing leaves is a cultural practice not a party trick. If you have a drug test in your future, be informed.
