Cape Town’s postcard is a mountain that closes. Build a flexible first two days. When the tablecloth of cloud sits on the plateau, go to Kirstenbosch, the peninsula, or wine. When it clears, drop everything and go up.

How many days in Cape Town?

Five. Mountain, peninsula, wine, Robben Island, a rest or hiking day. Three is a rush that fails when the cableway closes.

Safety?

Standard advice is real: do not walk empty beaches or downtown streets at night with a camera out, use Uber, listen to your hotel. Tourist areas are workable. Informal settlements are not a township tour to gawk at — if you visit, go with a community-run organisation.

Car hire?

Useful for the peninsula and wine if you have a sober driver. City centre parking and smash-and-grab risk at viewpoints argue for tours or an extra-cautious hire. Do not leave bags visible.

Waterfront?

Shops, the Robben Island ferry, and restaurants. It is not Cape Town. Eat there once if convenient, do not base the trip on it.

Load shedding?

Power cuts still happen on a schedule. Hotels have inverters. Check the app. It is annoying, not usually trip-ending.
